Abstract

An excursus through the history of a modern commonplace -- monkeys at their typewriters replicating the text of Shakespeare -- leads to a fundamental question: when are two versions of a textual work "the same"? Software which can process and align two texts is described, and the reader is taken through the exercise of seeing synoptically texts which are nominally the same but very different in their verbal details. Examples given include Robinson Crusoe, Dickens, and the Hardy Boys.

Un excursus vers l'histoire d'une banalité moderne -- des singes qui reproduisent à leur machine à écrire le texte de Shakespeare -- mène à une question fondamentale : quand deux versions d'un travail textuel sont-elles "la même" ? Un logiciel qui peut traiter et aligner deux textes est décrit et le lecteur peut suivre dans les grandes lignes le processus d'analyse de textes qui sont nominalement les mêmes, mais qui sont très différents dans leurs détails de leur expression. Les exemples incluent Robinson Crusoe, Dickens et les Hardy Boys.
